WJU Volleyball Goes 1-1 In Strong Opening Performance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The #18 WJU Cardinal Volleyball team went 1-1 on the opening day of their 2013 campaign at the University of West Florida's Opening Weekend Tournament. The Cards dropped McKendree University in straight sets in game one, but fell to #4 Minnesota-Duluth in a thrilling second match.

The Cardinals were paced by Emma Schleucher who collected 12 of WJU's 35 kills en-route to the 25-13, 24-14, 25-12 victory.

The sailing was not as smooth in the Card's second match, squaring off against a talented UMD squad. WJU dropped the first two sets 25-20 and 25-17, but mounted a comeback, taking the next two sets 25-22 and 25-21. With the game on the line heading into the 5th set, UMD pulled away with the 15-8 win to take the victory.

Considering this was the first hit-out on the season for the young Cardinals, WJU Coach Christy Benner says she is happy with the team's performance. "Minnesota-Duluth and McKendree are both excellent squads, and I think our young team took away a ton of experience. We look forward to another opportunity to improve tomorrow."

The Cardinals take on the home town Argos of West Florida tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (ET) and finish the weekend's play at 4:30 p.m. against Southern Indiana.
