Jesuit Swimming Adds Depth with 2014 Recruiting Class

The women’s team inks seven new student-athletes. The four-time Appalachian Swimming Conference Championship men’s squad will seek a fifth-straight title with six new freshmen.

Wheeling, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit swimming program reloaded with a talented freshman class for the 2013-14 season by signing 13 new student-athletes. The 2013 Appalachian Swimming Conference Runner-up women's swimming team inked seven incoming freshmen while the 2013 ASC Championship squad added six swimmers.

"We are extremely pleased with our new talented class of swimmers," said Head Coach Mike Meyers. "The incoming freshmen will make an immediate impact to our success in-and-out of the water. We have hopes of claiming both ASC Championships and a pair of team Academic All-American awards this year."

Anna Davis is a fast and well-trained freestyler from Charleston, W.Va. She led the George Washington High School team to back-to-back West Virginia State Championships. During the run, Davis swam on two West Virginia State record-setting relay teams, which finished third in the 100 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle. She was a member of the perennial powerhouse HYCAT Charleston YMCA team, whom advanced to the YMCA Nationals last season. Along with talent and a high level of success and competitiveness, she will contribute to the Cardinals quest for Academic All-American distinction. Davis was an Advanced Placement Scholar, a Beta Club member, Senior Student Council member and graduated with honors.

"I am very excited to welcome Anna to our squad," said Meyers. "She will make an immediate impact on our team."

Brittney Foster was at two-time Swimmer of the Year for Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, Fla. Foster brings a long history of fast swimming to WJU, specializing in the sprints and butterfly events. She qualified for the Florida High School State Championships all four years and secured silver and bronze medals as a junior and senior. She also excelled for her club team, traveling to the South Eastern Swimming Championships over the last seven years for age group sectionals and senior sectionals. In addition, Foster has been highly engaged in extracurricular activities as a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Spanish Club.

"Brittney is a very fast swimmer and a fun, loving young lady," said Meyers. "I am sure she will bring a high energy level to the pool deck everyday."

Danielle Pekular is an outstanding swimmer from Bishop Canevin High School in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was Bishop Canevin's team captain and currently holds BCHS school records in 10 events. Pekular earned a position on the medal platform all four years in the powerful Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Championships and in 2012 placed in the Top 16 at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) State Swimming Championships in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke events while earning PIAA All-State Honorable Mention honors. She served as President of BCHS Student Council and was a member of Chartiers Valley Swim Club, Junior Achievement, Crusaders for Life, and Future Business Leaders of America.

'Danielle has a bright future," said Meyers. "With her work ethic and dedication, she will continue improve her times and compete at a high level for WJU."

Caitie Preskorn is a four-year West Virginia State Championship Qualifier from Notre Dame High School in Bridgeport, W.Va. Specializing in the 500 and 200 freestyle events, Preskorn helped NDHS earn two trips to the West Virginia State Championship winners' podium with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay and a fifth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. She is a two-time West Virginia Southern Zone Team member with the Fairmont USS team and excels in the classroom. She maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her high school career, graduating fourth in her class, and was a four-year member of the National Honor Society. She is an active and involved member of her community and attended the 2012 American Region Rhododendron Girls State at WJU.

"I am excited to welcome Caitie to the team," said Meyers. "She is a great addition for the athletic and academic success for the Lady Cards."

Stefanie Bouborka is a Pittsburgh product from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. She became a competitive swimmer at age five, and has loved swimming ever since. She is strong in the butterfly events and was a WPIAL championship meet qualifier all four years. Bouborka is an active volunteer at the Moon Run Fireman's Lenten Fish Fry, Market Day and the Robinson Township Girls Softball League.

"Stefanie will complement our strong core of flyers," Meyers stated. "She is also a strong freestyler and IM'er, which will add depth to our women's squad."

Sloane Glover earned the title of captain her senior year at Lehman Catholic High School in Piqua, Ohio. She had an outstanding four year career as an Ohio District qualifier in the butterfly and freestyle events.. In addition, Glover graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. She is also very busy outside of the pool as an active member in Ineract, Relay for Life, and Pro Life organizations

"Sloane will be a strong contributor in both the dual meets and ASC Conference Championships," said Meyers. "She will also help us achieve the Academic All-American status."

Krista Sudyk maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated as valedictorian of East Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh. Her leadership qualities landed her as two-time captain of the East Allegheny Varsity Swimming team and she also was voted by her teachers as Student of the Year two years in a row. Sudyk was active in several extra-curricular activities, participating in the marching band, concert band, symphony orchestra and was in "the pit" for the musical. In addition, she held the position of secretary for the National Honor Society. Sudyk volunteers for the St. Robert Bellarmine Youth Group and Venture Crew 184. She served as the representative of Vicariate 2, District 4 on the Diocesan Youth Council for the Diocese of Pittsburgh

"Krista has the potential to improve and make a contribution to our team in the water," said Meyers. "Furthermore, her leadership skills and academic success will be valuable."

The Cardinal men have added six swimmers to the 2013-14 roster, beginning with Michael Pineda, a senior standout from Gulf Coast High School in Naples, Fla. Pineda is a four-year Gulf Coast Conference Champion in the 500 freestyle event with an impressive 4:40.85 time. His performance earned him trips to the Regional and State Championships all four year as well. Pineda has experience in several events, displaying speed in the 50 freestyle and great mile times, while his times in the butterfly events continue to become faster. He was a member of the Student Accountability Board, and was a news anchor for the Gulf Coast High School television station.

"Michael brings a wide array of talents and experiences to the team," said Coach Meyers. "Not only will he add to the Jesuit student body, but he will help us in our quest to get to the NCAA Championships next season, we are happy to have him on board."

Branford Rimbert is a Suwanee, Ga. native. At 11-years-old, he began swimming competitively and playing water polo. Rimbert became three-year letterman at Collins Hill High School, a four-year county qualifier in Gwinnett County and a two-year Georgia State qualifier in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. During his senior season, he was involved in a three-time swim off in the 50 freestyle event, which he eventually won. He was a member of the Georgia High School Water Polo team, which won the state title in 2011 and finished runner-up in 2010 and 2012.

"Branford is a good fit for our program," Meyers stated. "He maintained a 3.1 GPA in high school which will assist in a repeat as an Academic All-American team and he enjoys volunteering in the community."

Christopher Baker brings a winning tradition to the Cardinals from Barnesville, Ohio. He was a five-time Ohio Valley Athletic Conference gold medalist, two-time silver medalist and a bronze medalist for Barnesville High School. He competed in two Ohio State High School Swimming Championships and was a YMCA national qualifier for the JB Chambers YMCA. His academic accomplishments include multiple honor roll appearances, a National Honor Society member and vice president of his class twice. Baker was an active member of the Key Club, Interact and the Blood Bash Committee.

"Chris can swim anything," said Meyers. "He will bring a strong presence to our distance freestyle events and individual medley races."

Josh Remaniak is a graduate of Mother of Divine Grace High School in Cordova, Md. and a transfer from Niagara University in Niagara, N.Y. As a distance swimmer for the Purple Eagles, Remaniak swam the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyles at the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. Also an excellent student, Remaniak earned dean's list status at Niagara, achieving a 3.46 GPA.

"I was looking for a Catholic school, a sports management program and a good swimming program and found all three at WJU," Remaniak explained. "While on my visit, I connected well with both the members of the swim team, Coach Meyers and management department…it was an easy decision"

"Josh is a talented swimmer," said Meyers. "He has the ability to make enormous waves for us in the individual medley and butterfly events."

Jesuit Swimming wrapped-up the 2014 class with a pair of local swimming standouts from The Linsly School in Zach Hamm and Marc Gittings.

As captain of the Linsly team, Hamm led the Cadets to a 55-0 dual meet career record which included four OVAC Championships. He broke the 100 butterfly record which stood for 30 years and continued to rewrite Linsly's swimming history by setting new standards in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay events. Hamm qualified for the Eastern Prep School Championships and YMCA Nationals all four years and was a Speedo All-American. He maintained a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language (Spanish) Honor Society. Hamm earned the Warren Pugh Award and the Trustee Award while being named a Larsen Trust Scholar.

"Zach will be a welcomed addition and make an outstanding contribution to both as a student and a swimmer," said Meyers. "We are excited to have Zach in a Cardinal suit."

Another product of the legendary Linsly Coach Bill Brubaker and a long time member of the Marshall County Swim Team is Gittings. While at Linsly, he saw action in the 500 and 200 freestyle events, as well as the 200 individual medley. During his senior campaign, Gittings became a sprinter to help the 200 medley relay, and both 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. He made the qualifying standard in the individual 50 freestyle at the 2013 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships.

"Marc is a versatile swimmer, Meyers stated. "He will become a valuable team member as he extends his swimming career for the Cardinals."
