West Liberty, W.Va. – Three goals from Wheeling Jesuit's most prolific attackers was good enough to lead the Cardinals past West Liberty 3-2 in a Mountain East Conference match at West Liberty on Saturday.
WJU's
Aubrey Hutchinson, a sophomore from Beaver, PA, scored twice and now leads the Cardinals with seven on the season. Also scoring for the Cardinals was senior captain
Jessie Vilkofsky, who now has four goals on the season.
Vilkofsky put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 just 10 minutes into the match when Hutchinson laid out a cross-pass her captain then bounced off the left goal post, past the keeper, and into the net for the goal.
The Hilltoppers tied the match in the 16th minute when Kelana Palmer put a shot in the corner of the net, dribbling past the WJU defender for a shot in lower left corner of the goal.
Just before halftime Hutchinson regained the lead for the Cardinals off an assist from
Erin Sheplavy, giving WJU the 2-1 advantage going into the break.
Sheplavy and Hutchinson connected again for the Cards 3
rd goal on the day in the 73rd minute to put WJU up 3-1. This time, Sheplavy put up a corner kick that "Hutch" put in the net to give the Cardinals the final advantage.
West Liberty scored again on a penalty kick off a controversial handball call from the referee in the 80
th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Toppers as WJU walked away with the 3-2 win.
"I think it was a great team effort out there today," said WJU Head Coach
Carrie Hanna. "I'm proud of the ladies for working hard to get the win."
The win puts WJU at 5-6 on the season. The Cardinals return to MEC play at home against Urbana on October 9
th in a double header with the WJU men's soccer team. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 1pm.
