Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team outscored the visiting Mountain Lions of Concord University 41-33 in the second half en route to a 71-63 victory. With the win, Jesuit improved to 11-8 overall and 8-7 in league play, while the Mountain Lions fell to 10-7 and 6-7 in the WVIAC.
“It was a hard fought game and good win,” said Head Coach Danny Sancomb. “We kept battling. Didn't execute well in the first half, but turned things around in the second half. We did a great job on the glass and at the defensive end.
Ben Siefert added the spark we needed in the second half. We also received big contributions off the bench from
Andre Harris,
Eric Siefert and
Darin Harris.”
The Cardinals were led by
Ben Siefert's 19-point performance which included an 8-for-11 (73 percent) performance from the field.
Justin Fritts followed with 14 points, while
Recardo Gaddy and
Andre Harris poured in 10 points each.
Eric Siefert added nine points, while
Joe Prati and
Darin Harris rounded out the scoring with five and four, respectively.
Prati and
Darin Harris added a team-high six rebounds apiece as the Cardinals controlled the glass with a 33-24 advantage.
Andre Harris and
Eric Siefert followed with five boards each, while
Ben Siefert and Gaddy grabbed four and three.
The game appeared to be a back-and-forth battle until the Mountain Lions surged with 12 unanswered points, erasing a three point deficit and establishing a nine point lead, 18-9. Jesuit responded from deep as
Andre Harris drained a 3-pointer and
Ben Siefert followed with an inside move for two points.
Concord continued to play with the lead until a lay-in by Fritts at 8:11 sparked an 11-2 Cardinal run for a 25-23 advantage. Fritts followed the layup with a pair of free throws and Gaddy added a trifecta.
Eric Siefert ended the run with a pair of buckets. The two teams traded baskets until the buzzer sounded, resulting in a 30-30 stalemate at halftime.
Concord started the second half with an 8-0 run. However, Jesuit increased the defensive pressure and retaliated with 13 unanswered points.
Ben Siefert led the charge with eight consecutive points and found the bottom of the net again after an old-fashioned 3-point play by Gaddy, 43-38.
The Cardinals continued to create turnovers while extending the lead to 11 points, 61-50 with 8:16 left to play. Concord cut the Cardinal lead to 61-59, but back-to-back buckets by Eric and
Ben Siefert kept the lead intact, 65-59. Wheeling Jesuit ended the game with a 6-for-6 performance from the charity stripe as Fritts buried four free throws and Gaddy made two.
The Cardinals recorded nine steals as
Ben Siefert swiped four passes, Gaddy and
Eric Siefert secured two each and
Andre Harris had one. The Cardinals shot 52 percent from the floor in the final stanza with a 14-for-27 performance which included a 3-of-7 effort from deep.
Damien Tunstalle led the Mountain Lions with 20 points, while Mike Boyd and Cam Shannon followed with 12 and 10.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Monday, February 4 on the road against Fairmont State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
