Five Pool Records Fall, Jesuit Swimming Drowns D&E on Senior Day

WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit swim teams recognized seven individuals before their final home meet as a Cardinal. Taylor Allen, Patrick Chadowski, Dominic DePalma, Jennifer Elias, Colin Lawler, Tom Smith and Jacob Totherow were the honorees. In the final home stand, the Cardinals broke five pool records en route to a sweep of the Senators of Davis & Elkins College. The women earned a 101-35 victory, while the men posted 103-29 win.
                                            
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Taylor Ulisse, Lydia Kidd, Vanessa Gipson and Meghan Ebbert broke the pool record with a time of 8:13.09, while the men reset four pool standards. The men's 200-yard medley relay team of Jakub Skrzypczak, Bill Risse, Eric Pietz and Pete Schraf finished with a time of 1:37.98, and the men's 800 freestyle relay of Chadowski, Jandre Strauss, Henrique Fructuozo and Tom Smith established a new pool record of 7:11.64. Chadowski and Smith continued to dominate the record board. Chadowski set a new standard in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1.56.94 and Smith entered the chart in the 100-yard freestyle at 47.63.
 
The Cardinals had several additional outstanding swims. On the women's side, Maria Palmquist, Kidd, Gipson, Paige Carpenetti, Alexis Anderson, Sarah Peters and Ebbert secured top times. Palmquist touched first in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 26.53, and Kidd won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.81. Gipson added to the women's success with a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:12.33, while Carpenetti was the fastest in the 100-yard freestyle race at 59.04. Anderson used the 500-yard freestyle event for a top time of 5:43.92 and went on to win the 1000 Free at 11:52.39. Peters finished first in the 200 Free with a time of 2:08.93, and Ebbert paced the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:09.68.
 
For the men, Strauss, Smith, Chadowski, Risse, Evan Walker and Matt Whitehurst topped the winner's podium. Strauss won the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:48.84, and Smith just missed a pool record by 1/100 of a second in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.55. Chadowski picked up another win at home, finishing first 100-yard butterfly at 52.82. Risse claimed the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Walker emerged as the winner in the 1000 Free, 10:24.13. Whitehurst rounded out the top times with a win in the 500-yard freestyle, 5:21.20.  
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, February 2 in Washington, Pa. against Washington and Jefferson College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
 
As for the seniors….
 
Allen is a senior from Cambridge, Ohio and has competed in the water for 15 years and qualified for Ohio's District Swim Meet all four years in high school. At Wheeling Jesuit, he competed in the backstroke and sprint freestyle events and has contributed to three Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships.
 
Chadowski is a senior from Berea, Ohio and is the Men's Swim Team Captain. In 2010, he was the 400 Medley Relay Champion; in 2011, he earned NCAA B-Cut times in the 200 Fly and 200 IM. In addition, he was the 800 Freestyle Relay Champion and received the Coaches' Shotwell Award. For 2012, Patrick was the 800 Freestyle Relay, 400 Medley Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay Champion.


DePalma is a senior from Lima, Ohio and swims distance freestyle for the Cardinals. He has been a member of two Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships.

Elias is a senior from Wheeling, W.Va. and has managed the swim team for three years while working in the Registrar's Office.
 
Lawler is a senior from Cherry Hill, N.J. and has been a member of the swim team for the past four years, two years as an active swimmer and two years as manager.

Smith is a senior from Tucson, Ariz. and has been a member of three Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships, swimming the freestyle events. He currently holds the ASC record in the 800 Freestyle Relay and the school record in the 100 Freestyle. In 2012, Tom received the Coaches' Shotwell Award.
 
Totherow is a senior from Ball Ground, Ga. and competes in the Individual Medley and Butterfly events. He received the Coaches' Shotwell Award his sophomore year. In addition, he has been a member of three Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships.
