Lady Blues Outlast Cardinals on the Road, 89-80

Box Score BLUEFIELD, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team traveled to Bluefield, W.Va. for a league contest against Bluefield State College on Thursday evening. The game was scheduled for 5:30 p.m., however, due to inclement weather and a 2-hour delay in team travel, tipoff did not occur until after 7 p.m. Bluefield State's 10-0 run in the second half tied the game and shifted the momentum enough for the home squad to secure an 89-80 victory.
 
Breanna Butler and Jaila Bryant led the Cardinals' offensive efforts with 19 points apiece. Taneka Lewis and Jamie Sobczak followed with 12 and 11, respectively. Emily Robinson and Kelsey Pacholke recorded nine and eight, while Alex Anderson rounded out the scoring with two points.
 
In the first half, Bluefield State appeared to have the momentum, leading by as many as eight points, 20-12, and controlling the scoreboard until the 3:07 mark. With 4:05 remaining in the half and trailing by six points, 36-30, Jesuit's Robinson connected from long distance which sparked a 17-0 Cardinal run. Sobczak followed with a pair of free throws, and WJU established their second lead of the game, 37-36 at 3:07 – WJU's first lead was 4-3 at 19:06. The run continued with back-to-back field goals from Sobczak and three layups from Bryant, including a free throw which completed an old fashion 3-point play. At the end of the half, Jesuit led 46-36.
 
Wheeling Jesuit carried the momentum into the second half, maintaining the 10-point lead until the 13-minute mark, 60-50. However, the home standing Lady Blues began to chip-away at the Cardinal advantage. At 12:50, Bluefield State connected with a layup and followed with eight unanswered points to tie the game at 60 apiece with 11:00 left to play. The two teams traded a pair of buckets, 64-64, and the Lady Blues capitalized with another scoring burst. Bluefield State built a 6-point, 75-69 lead with 5:49 remaining, and Jesuit outscored the opponent 7-2 to pull within one point, 77-76, with 3:15 left. Again, the Lady Blues established a six point advantage, eventually winning by nine, 89-80.
 
Bluefield State was led by Charlene Diggs and Dragana Tomic with 18 points apiece. LaWanna Gravely added 15 points and Tasia Nolan chipped in 13 points.
 
Wheeling Jesuit held a slight 43-42 edge on the glass.
 
The Cardinals will travel to Buckhannon, W.Va. on Saturday, January 19 for a league contest against West Virginia Wesleyan College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
