Lady Cardinals Fought Back in Second Half, But Fall to Battlers

Box Score  WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team fell 67-59 to the visiting Battlers f Alderson Broaddus College at the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
 
Three Cardinals (4-7, 1-6 WVIAC) notched double-digits on Thursday evening as Taneka Lewis scored a team-high 16 points. Breanna Butler followed with 12 and Emily Robinson recorded 11. Kelsey Pacholke and Jamie Sobczak provided a spark off the bench with eight points apiece, while Alex Anderson rounded out the scoring with four points.
 
Alderson-Broaddus raced to a 14-1 start as Jesuit earned open looks but couldn't get the shots to fall. Sobczak split a pair of free throw to give the Cardinals their initial point with 14:39 showing on the clock. Four minutes later, Lewis followed with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 14-3, and Pacholke found the bottom of the net on three consecutive possessions to make it 14-9.
 
The battlers answered the WJU run with a 3-pointer that sparked a 14-4 run to establish a 15-point, 28-13 advantage. The Battlers held on to a double-digit lead as time expired in the first half, 30-17.
 
In the second half, Jesuit immediately cut the Battlers advantage to four points, 37-33 behind a Robinson 3-pointer and four shots from the charity stripe by Lewis (2) and Butler (2). Robinson (1), Butler (1) and Anderson (2)  added field goals to cap-off the 13-7 start, and a back and-forth battle began.
 
AB continued to hold a slight edge, however, with 8:11 remaining in the game, Robinson lifted the Cardinals to a 45-43 advantage on a long-distance shot. AB answered with a trifecta, and Robinson buried a second 3-pointer to keep the Cardinals ahead by two points, 48-46. The two teams traded buckets until a 50-50 stalemate with 6:10 left to play. The Battlers capitalized on a pair of Jesuit miscues to take a 55-50 lead, and controlled the scoreboard the rest of the way.
 
Amanda Peoples led Alderson-Broaddus with a double-double performance, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Nautica Davis also recorded double figures, finishing with 11 points, while the rest of the score sheet was balanced.
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, January 12 at the Alma Grace McDonough Center against Ohio Valley University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
