Box Score 2 FINDLAY, Ohio---The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team is off to the fastest start in school history as the Cardinals are 7-1 after two weeks of play. A week ago, WJU opened the season with a 4-0 showing at the Nova Southeastern Tournament and carried the momentum into this weekend's tournament at the University of Findlay. The Cardinals posted a 3-1 record, collecting wins over No. 8 Indianapolis, Findlay and their Elite Eight foe Hillsdale College.
After a 1-1 start, the Cardinals swept day two, beginning with the hosts, University of Findlay followed by a rematch with the Elite Eight opponent, Hillsdale College. Jesuit defeated Findlay by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-20.
Allissa Ware led the offensive attack with 16 kills and added 13 digs while
Abby Wietrzykowski followed with 15 kills.
Jenna Pew tossed 24 assists and collected 10 kills, and
Madison Strall threw up a team-best 27 assists.
Makenzie Ripley led the defense with 23 digs.
Against Hillsdale, the Cardinals' offense was powered by Ware and Pew, flooring 20 kills apiece. Ware added 16 digs to her daily total while Pew notched 15 assists, 11 digs and nine blocks. Strall had 32 assists and 11 digs, and Ripley tallied 23 digs.
Wheeling Jesuit and Hillsdale battled back-and-forth as Jesuit won the first and third sets, 25-21. The Cardinals dropped the second and fourth 25-15 and 25-23, leaving the fifth set to determine the winner. WJU flew to a 4-1 advantage and led the entire way. Hillsdale cut the lead to one point by the middle of the set, but the Cardinals continued cling on to the lead, eventually closing out the match 15-13.
Pew and Ripley earned post-tournament accolades. Pew was named to the all-tournament team and Ripley was named most outstanding libero.
Wheeling Jesuit opens league play on Wednesday, September 12 in Johnstown, Pa. against Pitt-Johnstown. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
