Box Score 2 FINDLAY, Ohio --- After a 4-0 start and falling one spot from 25
th to 26
th in the national rankings, the Wheeling Jesuit Volleyball team opened the Findlay Tournament with a 3-2 win over the NCAA's No. 8 ranked University of Indianapolis.
The Cardinals claimed the first two sets 25-19 and 25-21, respectively, before dropping sets three and four 25-12 and 25-22. In the final set, Jesuit flew to a 5-1 advantage, but the Greyhounds recovered, tying the finale five times.
WJU buried the first three points as
Madison Strall and
Abby Wietrzykowski each floored a kill, while
Makenzie Ripley followed with a service ace. After a UIndy score,
Jenna Pew and
Allissa Ware recorded back-to-back kills, and the two teams battled to an 8-8 stalemate. Jesuit regained the lead as Ware recorded her third kill of the set. UIndy tied the game again at 10-10, but WJU's Wietrzykowski threw down a pair of kills for a 12-10 advantage. The Greyhounds, evened the set again, 12-12, but the Cardinals rallied with a 3-1 run to end the match 15-13.
Pew led with an outstanding all-around performance, registering 19 kills, 20 assists and nine blocks. Wietrzykowski followed with 16 kills, and Ware issued 13 kills coupled with 10 digs. Strall put the offense in motion with 29 assists and added 15 digs, while Ripley anchored the back line with a team-high 23 digs.
A few hours later, the Cardinals five-game winning streak came to an end. Jesuit went distance with Wayne State University, a team they defeated last weekend, falling 3-2 by scores of 26-28, 25-17, 20-25, 25-19 and 9-15.
Wietrzykowski lead the offense with 16 kills, while Ware followed with 13 kills and 17 digs. Pew recorded a triple-double with 14 assists, 12 kills and 10 blocks. Strall tossed 29 assists with 16 digs, and Ripley added 17 digs.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, September 8, sharing the court with the tournament host, University of Findlay, at 11 a.m. followed by a rematch of the Elite Eight match against Hillsdale College at 2:30 p.m.
