Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. --- After battling No. 4 ranked Millersville University and Philadelphia University in the first two contests, the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team (1-2) continued non-conference play on Wednesday evening. Jesuit played host to the visiting Vulcans from California University of Pa. (1-2) at James LaRosa Stadium. The Cardinals secured the season's first win, 1-0, as WJU's
Luke Roan netted the game winner late in the second half.
“It was great to get a result against a very tough opponent,” said Head Coach Jim Regan. “The guys played tough and didn't quit, and hopefully, this will give us some momentum for conference play.”
The first half was aggressively played by both teams, and Jesuit held a 3-2 advantage in shots and corner kick attempts at halftime. The Cardinals most opportune moment to score was with 30 seconds remaining in the half when
Philip Mshelbwala sent the ball deep in to the box from the left corner to the near post for
Victor Picchio, who was under heavy defensive pressure. He turned and fired the shot over the frame.
In the second half, the two teams continued to be aggressive. However, Jesuit began to attack the goal, outshooting the Vulcans 9-2. In the final 21 minutes of regulation, the Cardinals turned up the offensive pressure, creating several opportunities to take the lead. Jesuit's first scoring threat was on a through ball, which was mishandled by the Cal goal keeper, leaving an empty net, but Jesuit's attempt was wide.
The following possession, the Cardinals midfield continued to push the ball down the field. Picchio positioned himself behind the defense, received the ball and ripped a shot to the near corner which was stopped by California's goal keeper. In the 76
th minute, the Cardinals relentless attack paid-off when Picchio sent a cross to the far post for Roan, who broke the scoring silence. Roan blasted the game-winner into the lower corner of the near post.
Jesuit's back row, led by Senior Captain
Dominic Welsh, disrupted Cal U's offensive flow, while the Cardinals' goal keeper,
Cody Thompson received the win. In 90-minutes of work, Thompson didn't record a save, but saw plenty of action with various crosses and corner attempts.
The Cardinals will be on the road Saturday, Sept. 8 against West Chester University. Kick off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
