#15 Cardinals Move to 5-0 in WVIAC Play with Win Over UC

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team remained undefeated in league play while improving to 17-1 overall on Friday evening. The Cardinals played host to conference foe the University of Charleston at the Alma Grace McDonough Center, winning in three-straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-13.
 
Charleston flew to a 4-1 advantage, and continued to hold the lead, until a pair of UC hitting errors tied the set at nine apiece. Charleston, again, grabbed a pair of brief leads at 10-9 and 11-10 when Jesuit's offense came alive. An Abby Wietrzykowski kill provided the much needed spark, and the Cardinals continued to roll. Jesuit took a two-point, 13-11, lead and outscored the Golden Eagles 12-8 down the stretch for a six-point victory.
 
In the second set, Jesuit played back-and-forth with the Eagles until a 10-10 split. The Cardinals scored three consecutive points before the Eagles floored a kill. Jenna Pew and Emily Blank followed with a pair of kills and Jesuit proceeded with another 12-6 run for the second set victory.
 
The final set was all Wheeling Jesuit. The Cardinals opened with four points and extended the lead to 11-4 within the first three service opportunities. The offense continued to fire on all cylinders, building a 17-9 advantage. The Cardinals pounded out eight additional points compared to UC's four to seal the league victory.

Wietrzykowski led the offense with 14 kills. Allissa Ware added 12 kills and eight digs, while Pew floored 10 kills and had 19 assists. Strall tossed 17 assists and 11 digs.Makenzie Ripley anchored the defense with 14 digs. Above the net, Pew registered six blocks and Rachel Caja tallied four.
 
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Tuesday, October 2 against regional-rival California University of Pennsylvania at the Alma Grace McDonough Center. The Atlantic Region battle is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
