Box Score INDIANA, Pa.---The No. 15 ranked Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team traveled to Indiana, Pa. to battle in-region opponent Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Cardinals improved to 16-1 overall after defeating IUP (13-4) in three straight sets by scores of 29-27, 25-14 and 25-19.
The upset-minded Crimson Hawks flew out of the gate, taking a 7-4 advantage, but the Cardinals recovered. Jesuit evened the set at eight apiece, and the two teams traded points. At 19-19, Jesuit began to pull away, securing four consecutive points as
Madison Strall and
Abby Wietrzykowski floored points. The Cardinals built a 23-19 advantage, but the Hawks continued to make things difficult for WJU. IUP scored five-straight points to take a 24-23 lead, and again the two teams traded points until
Allissa Ware slammed down back-to-back kills for the 29-27 game one victory.
The Cardinals Cruised through the second set, winning 25-14. Ware recorded a set-high
five kills during the offensive outburst, while Wietrzykowski,
Rachel Gambow and
Rachel Caja added two kills each.
In the final set, a series of small runs made the difference for WJU. The set was back-and-forth as the first 10 points ended in a 5-5 split. Ware gave the Cardinals the advantage, and
Jenna Pew served three consecutive points for a 10-6 advantage. After a couple IUP scores, Jesuit extended the lead to 18-13, eventually putting the match away on a kill by Pew.
Ware had 18 digs and 14 kills to lead the Cardinals, while Wietrzykowski and Pew added 11 kills apiece. Caja finished with five kills, and Strall and Gambow rounded out the scoring with 3 kills and 2 kills, respectively.
Strall tossed a team high 23 assists and Pew followed with 19.
Makenzie Ripley recorded a team-high 22 digs.
The Cardinals will host a Lupus Awareness Match against the University of Charleston on Friday, September 29. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Admission will be $2 and all proceeds will benefit the Lupus Foundation.
