Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The No. 16 ranked Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in league play after defeating WVIAC foe West Virginia State University (1-11, 0-2 WVIAC) in three straight sets at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Tuesday evening. The Cardinals defeated the Yellow Jackets by scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-15. With the win, the Cardinal Volleyball program extended their winning streak to 70 matches against WVIAC opponents, which includes the WVIAC tournament.
The offense was fueled by the reining WVIAC Player of the Year
Allissa Ware. The senior outside hitter floored 11 kills and, on the defensive side of the net, added eight digs with five blocks.
Jenna Pew,
Abby Wietrzykowski and
Emily Blank supported the offensive attack with nine kills each, while
Madison Strall tossed a team-high 21 assists. Pew followed with 14 assists, eight digs and three blocks. Blank also tallied three blocks.
Leading the Cardinals defensive efforts were
Makenzie Ripley and
Rachel Caja. Ripley protected the back line, digging 27 Yellow Jacket attacks while Caja tallied a team-best six blocks.
Jesuit flew to a 12-6 advantage in the opening set, and cruised to the 12-point victory. In the second set, Jesuit held a 13-6 lead and limited the Jackets to just 10 points. The final set showcased six ties and two lead changes before Jesuit made their run. With the score 8-7, the Cardinals 12-5 run for a 20-12 advantage and eventually closed the match with a 1o point margin of victory.
The Cardinals will host a seven-team tournament on Friday and Saturday, September 21-22 at the Alma Grace McDonough center. The tournament will feature two courts and seven matches on Friday followed by four matches on Saturday. The field consists of Alderson-Broaddus College, Cedarville University, Glenville State College, Ohio Valley University, Virginia Union, West Liberty University and Wheeling Jesuit.
The Cardinals begin tournament play with Ohio Valley at 4 p.m. and Virginia Union at 6 p.m. The following day, Jesuit will battle Cedarville at 2 p.m. and West Liberty at 4 p.m.
