Men’s Soccer Falls in Final Seconds

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team scored two goals to equalize the game with under 12-minutes remaining in the match on Saturday, however, a goal scored as time expired allowed Davis & Elkins College a 3-2 victory at James LaRosa Soccer Complex.
 
In a physically played first half, Jesuit trailed 1-0 at the break as the Senators' James Pucci found the frame in the 20th minute. WJU's Sean Murphy suffered a head injury midway through the initial 45-minute period and was rushed to the hospital.  WJU held the advantage in shots and corner kicks in the first half, attempting four shots and four corners compared to D&E's two shots and one corner attempt.
 
The bumping and shoving continued in the second half as both teams battled for field position. In the 60th minute, the Senators increased the lead with a second unassisted goal goal by Wyatt Hill. Jesuit continued to attack the defense, ripping a game-high 8 second-half shots, and finally broke the scoring silence when Victor Picchio connected on a penalty kick at 78:33.
 
Trialing 2-1 in the 85th minute, WJU's Nicolay Netskar sent a perfectly placed pass through the Senators into the box for Philip Mshelbwala. With Luke Roan approaching the far post, Mshelbwala quickly dumped the ball Roan who knocked down the equalizer.
 
In the final five minutes, the Cardinals dominated possession and continued to push the ball down the field, earning two corner kicks. The two teams battled in the midfield with 30-seconds remaining when the ball was played to the near sideline. Jesuit was call for a foul and play was stopped with just 4-seconds showing on the clock. The Senators attempt to get the ball through Jesuit's wall failed, and the ball went to the far side of the box where Malcom Kenlock booted the ball toward the frame as the buzzer sounded. The shot found its way into the net, and was ruled as a game winner.
 
The Cardinals will continue league play on Wednesday, September 19 against the University of Pitt-Johnstown. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Johnstown, Pa.
