Jesuit Starts Season with a Tournament Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. --- The No. 25 ranked Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team returned to the court at the Nova Southeastern tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for two games on Saturday. The Cardinals wrapped up tournament play  with an unbeaten 4-0 record. Jesuit continued it's dominance against Texas A&M International University, winning in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23.  A few hours later, the Cardinal shared the court with the hosts, and needed four sets to drown the Sharks by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-18.
 
The Cardinals displayed a balanced attack against Texas A&M International. Jenna Pew led the offense with10 kills while Allissa Ware,  Rachel Caja and Abby Wietrzykowski contributed nine kills each. Madison Strall recorded her first collegiate double-double with a team-high 18 assists and 11 digs. Mikayla Zernic added 12 assists to the offense while Corrin Early's defensive efforts produced 11 digs. Above the net, Pew tallied five blocks and Ashley Remlinger had four.
 
In the first set, Jesuit outscored the Dustdevils 7-1 for an 18-12 advantage which proved to be enough to secure the win. The Cardinals trailed 14-11 in set two, but quickly rattled-off five consecutive points for a 16-14 advantage. The Dustdevils retaliated, tying the game at 20 points apiece, however back-to-back strikes from Pew and Caja created some breathing room, and the Cardinals held a 2-0 set advantage. Jesuit came from behind again in the final set after staring at a 15-9 deficit. A&M increased the lead to 21-14 when the Cardinals began to make their move with a 5-2 run. Trailing 23-20, Wietrzykowski delivered a pair of service aces which sparked a 5-0 run to close out the game. Pew and Ware added blocks, and after an A&M attacking error, Ware pounded out the final blow.
 
In the nightcap against Nova Southeastern, the tournament hosts, Jesuit pulled away early in the first two sets and held on for wins. In the third set, the Sharks flew to a 5-1 advantage and the Cardinals couldn't recover. Jesuit bounced back in the final frame, building a 14-10 lead while fighting off a mini-scoring burst by the Sharks. Jesuit proceeded to outscore Nova 8-4 for the win.
 
During the tournament finale, Ware registered a double-double. The reining WVIAC Player of the Year floored a team-best 17 kills coupled with 13 digs. Pew had all-around solid performance with 10 assist, nine kills and six digs, while Makenzie Ripley anchored the defense with 28 digs.
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, September 7-8 in Findlay, Ohio at the Findlay University Tournament. Jesuit will open with Indianapolis University and Wayne State University on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. The Cardinals will continue to play a tough competition on Saturday as they share the court with Findlay at 11 a.m., and a rematch of last season's Elite Eight contest against Hillsdale College at 2:30 p.m.
