Eight Pool Records Fall, Crimson Hawks Sweep Cards

WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's and women's swim teams hosted regional rival Indiana University of Pa. on Saturday at the Alma Grace McDonough Center Natatorium. WJU's Jandre Strauss set two new pool records, however, the Cardinal men and women fell to the Crimson Hawks by scores of 139-123 and 153-100, respectively. In addition, IUP claimed six pool records.
 
Strauss set new standards in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events. The ASC Swimmer of the Week stopped the timer first in the 100 Breast at 59.94, eclipsing the 1:00.46 set in 2011. The freshman from Paarl, South Africa established a second pool record in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:10.56, besting his previous mark of 2:11.76.
 
Thomas Smith, Henrique Fructuozo, Patrick Chadowski and Emily Martin added first place finishes for the Cardinals.
 
Smith claimed top honors in three events, the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle events. The senior from Tucson, Ariz. recorded times of 21.90, 49.08 and 1:50.55. Fructuozo won the 500 Free with a time of 4:56.50, and Chadowski stopped the timer at 2:00.02 for a win in the 200-yard individual medley – Straus clamed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.37.
 
Martin secured the lone first place finish for the women's team in the 100-yard butterfly event. The two-time ASC Swimmer of the Year won the 100 Fly with a time of 1:01.59.
 
IUP set six pool records in the regional battle. The men's 200-yard medley relay team replaced the time of 1:38.39, set in 2011 by WJU, with a time of 1:37.55. Rudy DaCosta flew to a 1:55.74 time in the 200-yard backstroke, eclipsing the 1:56.90 set in 2010. Steve Long also set a pool standard in the 100 Fly with a time of 51.91, surpassing WJU's Matt Houllier's mark of 52.25 set in 2001.
 
In the women's 200 Back, Allyson Mitidieri broke the time of 2:28.93 set in 1999 with a time of 2:24.75, and continued to make history with a record-breaking win in the 200 IM of 2:11.12 (2:11.24, 2010). Rounding out the pool standards was the women's 200-yard freestyle team with a time of 1:40.96, resetting the time of 1:40.96 set by IUP in 2010.
 
The Wheeling Jesuit swim teams will be back in action on Friday, November 9 in Buckhannon, W.Va. against West Virginia Wesleyan College. The meet is scheduled for 5 p.m.
