Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team (2-1, 0-1) opened West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on the road in Glenville, W.Va. on Tuesday evening. The Cardinals late surge to control the scoreboard fell short as Glenville State College (3-1, 1-0) held on for an 87-83 victory.
The Pioneers opened the game with a 7-0 scoring drive before
Ben Siefert, the reining WVIAC Player of the Week, found the bottom of the net from long distance, and
Joe Prati followed with a dunk. After the two teams traded trifectas, GSU built an eight point spread, 21-13, and Jesuit fought back to tie the game at 28 all. With 7:12 left in the half, the Pioneers hit another scoring drive, lasting five minutes and establishing a 13-point, 41-28 lead. WJU's
Darin Harris ended the run, but Jesuit trailed 46-36 at the break.
In the second half, Jesuit tied the game with in the first five minutes, but never gained the lead, 50-50. The Pioneers retaliated, extending the lead to as many as 14 points before Jesuit made their final move. With 7:39 remaining in the game, Harris knocked down two free throws, while
Justin Fritts and Prati followed with a layups. The Cardinals continued to attack the Pioneer defense as Harris, Prati and
Recardo Gaddy found the paint with high percentage shots, 80-78.
After a GSU lay-in,
Recardo Gaddy connected from deep, cutting the deficit to one point, but a 3-pointer by Glenville's Kevin Gray put the Pioneers back on top by four, 85-81. With 18-seconds left on the scoreboard
Ben Siefert found his way to the cylinder, but a pair of free throws by Jamel Morris iced the game.
Siefert paced the Cardinals with 21 points and seven assists and five rebounds, while Gaddy followed with 19 points and six boards. Prati recorded a double-double with 13 pointa and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Harris and Fritts rounded out the double-digit scoring with 18 and 10, respectively.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 1, traveling to Institute, W.Va. for their second league contest against West Virginia State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
