Jesuit Volleyball Advances to WVIAC Finals

Box Score CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit advanced to the WVIAC Championship with a 3-0 victory over Fairmont State Saturday afternoon.

Match scores were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23.

In the first set, the Cardinals raced to a 4-1 lead. Madison Strall started the match with her serve – and she assisted Jenna Pew's kill for the first point of the match. Corrin Early and Pew each had kills en route to the 4-1 advantage.

WJU pushed its margin to seven, 11-4, on a quick 3-0 spurt that saw the offense get kills from Ware, Strall and Rachel Caja. The Falcons' responded as Courtney Kress hammered home a pass from Jessica Margo to make it 11-5.

The teams traded the next 14 points. With the score at 18-12, Ware and Strall each had a kill to make it an eight-point advantage. The Cardinals cruised to the 11-point first set win as Strall and Abby Wietrzykowski each collected a kill for the final two points.

The Cardinals earned a 25-20 victory in the second frame. The squad took an 11-4 margin thanks in part to a couple of kills from Strall, two from ware and blocks by Pew and Ashley Remlinger. The Falcons fought back, making it a three-point deficit when Amber Wilson and Kaitlyn Witsamin registered back-to-back kills for a 14-11 contest.

The teams traded points the majority of the rest of the set. FSU closed the deficit to three on one other occasion, but could get no closer as Remlinger, Pew and Strall slammed home kills for the Cardinals' final three points of the stanza.

In the third set, FSU took a 7-6 lead on a combined block from Wilson and Leslie Giordon. The Falcons regained the lead when Witsaman slammed home a pass from Tabbie Bias.

With the score 16-15 in favor of the Cardinals, Ware, Caja and Corrin Early tallied kills, forcing the Falcons to call time at 19-15.

FSU promptly responded, pulling within two behind two errors from WJU and a kill from Swann. The Falcons even the set at 22 apiece when Swann and Giordon notched kills and the Cardinals had an attack error. After a time-out by WJU, the top seed reeled off three of the next four points to clinch the match.

For the contest, Ware totaled 11 kills while Pew registered 10 in the victory. Pew earned a double-double with 25 assists while Madison Strall dished out 23. Makenzie Ripley posted 13 digs and Ware 10. Ashley Remlinger stuffed a match-best four shots.

The Falcons were led by Swann's match-high 15 kills. Bias distributed 29 assists while Smathers recorded 11 digs. Swann narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs. Wilson accounted for four block assists while Giordon had three.


The Cardinals will play #2 seeded Griffins of Seton Hill University for the WVIAC Title on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.
