The Wheeling Jesuit swim teams opened their Appalachian Swimming Conference schedule on Friday night at the Alma Grace McDonough Center Natatorium a.k.a. The Bird Bath. The Cardinals picked up a pair of ASC victories as the women defeated Urbana University 127-68 and the men downed the Blue Knights 116-71.
In addition to the dual victories, WJU newcomer Jandre Strauss broke the men's pool record for the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.76 which was 3.12 seconds faster then Paul Mangen's standard set in 2002.
The Wheeling Jesuit women's squad won the first nine events scored as the 200-yard medley relay team of
Paige Carpenetti,
Meghan Ebbert,
Alexis Anderson and
Emily Martin set the tone with a time of 1:57.70.
Vanessa Gipson secured WJU's second win in the 1000-yard freestyle relay (11:14.13), and
Lydia Kidd touched second (11:25.58). Ebbert followed with a win in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.98), and
Maria Palmquist held a slight edge over Carpenetti for a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Palmquist stopped the timer at 1:03.96 and Carpenetti touched at 1:03.98.
Ebbert posted a second win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.26, and Anderson claimed the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.35). Martin recorded back-to-back victories with first place finishes in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 26.16 and 56.62, respectively. Rounding out the women's scoring was Carpenetti, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.96.
On the men's side, the Cardinals won seven of the first eight events. Henrique Fructuozo, Strauss, Patrick Chadowski and Thomas Smith started the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:39.34. Chris Munster followed with a win in the 1000 Free, clocking in at 10:17.12. Fructuozo finished with a time of 1:53.25 in the 200 Free, and Urbana's Matt Stover claimed the 100 Back with a time of 56.99.
Moments later, Strauss flew to a 1:00.88 time in the 100 Breast, and Chadowski followed with a first place touch in the 200 Fly at 2:00.93. Smith followed Martin's lead, placing first in back-to-back events. He won the 50 and 100 Free races with times of 21.76 and 49.10 to wrap-up the scoring for the men.
The Wheeling Jesuit swimming program will be back in the water on Saturday, November 3 at the Alma Grace McDonough Center to battle area-rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
