Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team found the back of the net first, but was edged in overtime on the road against West Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-1. With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the WVIAC, while Wesleyan improved to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in league play.
In the first half, the home squad held a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 3-2 advantage from the corner, but the Cardinals defense denied every opportunity to put the ball into the net. WJU goalkeeper,
Cody Thompson, made two stops in the first frame, and when the horn sounded, the Cardinals and the Bobcats were at a 0-0 stalemate.
After the break, Wheeling Jesuit broke the scoring silence in the 51
st minute when Nicholas Netskar buried a shot in the back of the net to take a 1-0 advantage. Wheeling Jesuit held the lead for 14 minutes when the Bobcats broke through with the equalizer. Jordan Halpern connected with the goal and Matthew Brown was credited with the assist. The Bobcats turned up the pressure, trying to hit the game-winner, but the Cardinals defense wouldn't allow the opportunity and forced overtime.
In the overtime period, Wesleyan attempted two shots in 7:55, and one of them found its way into the net for a 2-1 victory. Joe Ferraracci sent the game-winner into the net off a pass from Nicholas Amberman.
Thompson finished the match with seven saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on WJU's Homecoming Weekend Saturday, October 20 against Seton Hill University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
