Welsh nets game-winner in overtime to lift Cards past Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W.Va. -- An overtime goal by Dominic Welsh helped the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team pull out a 2-1 overtime victory on the road Tuesday evening at Ohio Valley University (3-9-1, 1-5-0 WVIAC).

With the win, WJU improved to 3-3-1 in WVIAC play and 6-6-1 overall.

Wheeling Jesuit managed just four shots in the first half of play, leaving the net empty, but denied the Fighting Scots a goal for a 0-0 tie at the break. WJU goalkeeper Shane Young recorded two saves in the opening period.

In the first four minutes of the second half, the scoring silence was broken by OVU's Josh Oberlin who received a pass from Nick Pecarski. Ohio Valley held the 1-0 advantage for nearly the next 40-minutes of play.

With less than two-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation, WJU's Andrew Hickey found Kevin Robson for the equalizing goal which eventually sent the game into overtime.

With thirty seconds remaining in the overtime period, Robson swung in a cross to Welsh who sent a header into back of the net for the game winner.

Young ended the game with five saves and held the Fighting Scots scoreless after their initial goal in the 49th minute.

Wheeling Jesuit will travel to Slippery Rock University for a non-conference match on Saturday, October 16th. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
