Stewart Jones, a redshirt junior from Weirton, W.Va., was selected as Wheeling Jesuit’s Athlete of the Week for his record breaking performance in the mile at the Youngstown Invitational on Friday, January 27.
In a field dominated heavily by Division I athletes, Jones flew past the competition for a first place finish with a time of 4:16.48 and eclipsed WJU’s indoor mile record, surpassing head coach Ricky Moore’s previous school best time of 4:17.32 set in 2004.
In addition, Jones set a new facility standard for Youngstown State’s Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) and currently holds WJU’s outdoor record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase event with a time of 9:09.02.
