Whitney Young was named WJU Women's Athlete of the Week for her performance at the PGA Minority Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
After falling to fourth place on day two of the 26th annual PGA Minority Championship, WJU’s Whitney Young finished strong and held the position through the final 18-holes.
The junior from Pittsburgh, Pa. completed the three-day, 54-hole event with 259 strokes, which was good for a fourth place finish. Xavier University’s Ariel McNair won the tournament with a three-day total of 239 strokes, while Mia Campbell (Alabama State) placed second with 241 strokes and Shanequa Valentine (Prairie View A&M) captured third place with 244 strokes.
Young battled Tom Fazio’s well bunkered course and dominating winds to finished three spots higher than her inaugural appearance at the championships. After a third-place first round finish of 85, she added four strokes to her second round, firing an 89, and bounced back with another round of 85 to end the tournament.
“I am proud of Whitney’s finish this year. She was able to move up three slots to finish fourth overall among tough competition and adverse elements,” said Head Coach Sue Vail. “She had a difficult time controlling the flight of the ball due to stronger winds than normal, which directly affected her approach shots.”
“During the tournament, she overcame the several challenges and put together three nice rounds of golf,” Vail remarked. “It’s quite an honor to be represented at an event like this with 180 players and over 40 universities.”
