Murray’s Career Night Earns MEC Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week Honors

Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team is out to a 1-0 start in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play for the first time since the 2019-2020 season. The Cardinals are coming off a 2-0 week, and one of their leaders was recognized in the Mountain East Conference's (MEC) Conference Player of the Week honors. Senior guard Caleb Murray was named the MEC Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week, splitting the award with Concord's Kraig Gilbert, after highlighting the week with a career-best effort on Saturday.

Murray put up double digits in both contests during the week, helping the Cardinals to a 2-0 record against Point Park and Salem. He would finish the week with 36 points, shooting 12-24 (50%) from the floor and 7-12 (58.3%) from three-point range. He would make multiple threes in both contests, and wrapped up the week with a 5-7 (71.4%) mark from the charity stripe. On the defensive side of the ball, Murray would add four rebounds and a steal, while adding one assist to round out the week. He would continue his streak of success on the offensive side of the ball, hitting double digits in back-to-back games, with a career-best effort being the top performance of the week.

It would come against Salem, where Murray set his new PR with 23 points as he helped lead the team to a 93-85 win over Salem. Murray would both take and make the most shots for the Cardinals on the day, going 8-14 (57.1%) and making each of his shots from the free throw line. His biggest showing would come from three-point range, where he tied his career-high with five three-pointers, going 5-7 (71.4%) from long range. Three of those came as part of the 42-point second half for the Cardinals as he helped the team secure the second win of the week. He would start out the week against Point Park, where he was one of five Cardinals to hit double figures with 13 points on the night. He would add two more three-pointers to round out the week, while pulling down two rebounds and going 3-5 from the charity stripe.

With Caleb Murray's win, the Cardinals have now had 25 student-athletes earn Conference Player of the Week honors this season. Murray is the first Wheeling University Men's Basketball player to be honored this season, and the first since former Cardinal Sean Ealy was honored back on February 3rd, 2025. Murray is one of two honorees on this week's list, joining Men's Track & Field athlete Alexander Rodriguez, who earned Co-Men's Track & Field Player of the Week honors.

The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, December 10th, when they hit the road to face West Virginia State at 7:30 PM.
